Welcome Back! Foot Care Basics for School
August is National Back to School Month! We’re surprised how fast the summer has gone. We hope you were able to take one final summer vacation or plan one for Labor Day weekend. As students and parents prepare for a new routine, it’s time to check in on our favorite seasonal reminders. We want each student to start the year strong and bring their best shoes on the first day of school. Remember, it’s all about support and comfort.
As you continue to read, stick around for a few back-to-school tips from the doctors at The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine. We share three practical ways to finalize your back-to-school plans with foot care.
Let’s get started!
Be sure of the size
If you want to start the school year on the wrong foot, try wearing the wrong size pair of shoes. It won’t be long before you realize that your feet desperately need more space and cushioning. Before school starts, schedule a time for shoe shopping, including asking the sales representative for a Brannock Device. Confirm your child’s shoe size as close to the start of school as possible. Growth spurts can catch us all by surprise.
Double-check your recovery efforts
Did your child have an injury over the summer? If you remember that frantic rush to the doctor, we encourage you to schedule a follow-up visit with a podiatrist. The follow-up visit is especially important if you plan to enroll your child in another sport. Always wait for approval from the doctor before resuming regular activity. There is a greater risk of re-injury if you don’t allow your child’s injury to heal correctly.
Share hygiene tips
Do you think your child would share a pair of locker room shoes? As parents, we hope for the best, but we can’t be certain. Now is the time to talk with your child about foot hygiene. One of the best places to start is in your bathroom at home. Show them the importance of washing, drying, and moisturizing their feet: model proper toenail trimming and even shoe shopping. Our children are watching, so let’s show them the best way.
