Women’s Foot Health and When to Call a Podiatrist
May 9 was National Women’s Checkup Day, but maybe you missed that moment to check in on their foot health. Do you know when to call a podiatrist? Earlier this month, we celebrated National Women’s Health Week. One word was key — assessment. Are you including your foot health in your assessment?
The doctors at The Center for Podiatric Care and Sports Medicine are here and ready to help you with foot conditions. As you are thinking about your own foot health, consider these things as red flags and reasons to call us.
Pain while wearing shoes
Oh no! Do your feet hurt while wearing shoes? We should always listen to our bodies. Pain is one way of telling us that something is wrong. If you have pain, you could have a common foot condition or even an injury. We can help. Continuing to wear shoes that cause you pain can worsen your symptoms.
● Take notes of which shoes cause pain
● Don’t ignore the discomfort
● Take a break from problematic shoes
Signs of infection
If you see signs of infection, contact us immediately. Do you know what should capture your attention? Think of redness, swelling, pain, and discharge. The area that has an infection may also feel warm to the touch.
● Infection is dangerous because it can spread
● For patients with diabetes, the infection can lead to amputation
● Don’t try to manage infection symptoms alone
Progressive Toe Deformities
A progressive toe deformity is a condition that will only worsen without intervention. Examples include bunions and hammertoes. While this condition doesn’t always cause pain, it could. Connecting with a podiatrist early can help with prevention.
● We inherit our foot structure; talk with other family members
● Pads and orthotics can provide relief
● Wear shoes that provide support and plenty of room
If you ever have concerns about your foot health, no detail is too small. We want to hear about what is causing you worry or discomfort. Pick up the phone and connect with us if you experience pain while wearing shoes, notice signs of an infection, or have progressive toe deformities. We are here to help you navigate the next steps.
